This case study explored a dataset for a fictitious software company, Atlas Labs, with a focus on importing, analyzing, and visualizing Human Resources (HR) data in Power BI. The primary goal was to monitor key employee metrics and understand factors influencing employee attrition. This project strengthened my skills in Power BI report development, DAX calculations, and data visualization.

Requirements Gathering: Understand the key metrics and objectives set by Atlas Labs.
Data Connection: Import HR datasets into Power BI.
Data Transformation: Clean and structure the data to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Data Modeling: Build relationships between tables and design the data model for efficient analysis.
Initial DAX Measures: Create calculated columns and measures using Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) to support key performance indicators.
Branding & Layout: Define the report’s design with a user-friendly layout, incorporating Atlas Labs' brand guidelines.
Chart Visualizations: Develop a suite of visualizations, including bar charts, pie charts, and KPIs to communicate insights effectively.
Atlas Labs has employed 1,470 people since its inception, with over 1,200 active employees at the time of analysis.
The Technology department is the largest, reflecting the company’s focus as a software business.
The employee attrition rate is 16%, raising questions about the company’s competitiveness in retaining talent.
The majority of employees are aged between 20 and 29 years.
Women make up only 2.7% of the active workforce, highlighting a gender diversity gap.
Employees identifying as non-binary account for 8.5% of total employees.
Employees identifying as White have the highest average salary, despite comprising the majority of the workforce.
Employees identifying as Mixed or Multiple Ethnic Groups have one of the lowest average salaries.
These insights can assist Atlas Labs in reviewing and enhancing its diversity and hiring strategies.
A deeper dive into attrition data revealed that employee satisfaction and compensation packages were key factors driving attrition.
By exploring demographics and departmental metrics, the analysis provides Atlas Labs with actionable insights to improve retention strategies and employee engagement.
This case study delivered a comprehensive Power BI report that not only tracked employee metrics but also provided Atlas Labs with critical insights into employee attrition and diversity. With this data, the HR team can make informed decisions to improve retention, adjust hiring practices, and enhance overall employee satisfaction.
